Alternate theme song: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Published March 31, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Watch out Will Smith, you’ve got some competition here for your theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Viddler davers brings us a refreshing look at an alternative theme song from a hit TV-series we’re all familiar with.

It is great when you can hear something you’re so familiar with be turned on its head and sound this good. Nicely done davers! Do you have any alternative theme songs in your head? Please share!

Brian Shaler’s midnight mountain climb

Published March 31, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Can’t sleep? Nothing to watch on TV? Why not hike up a huge mountain in the middle of the night? Well, that is exactly what Brian Shaler (friend: brianshaler) is asking: “Why not?“.

Raise your hand if you think Brian is crazy? Ok, maybe not crazy - in fact, he might be onto something. Just because conventional wisdom tells you that something is a little odd to do, maybe it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it anyway. Nicely done Brian, Phoenix looks neat at night from that high up.

Scott Johnson’s animations

Published March 29, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Scott Johnson (friend: extralife) has a few really great animations here on Viddler. Today’s featured video is called Crash, which sorta reminds me of line art that we’ve seen so much of over the years. Good stuff.

I’d love to see more animations like this so if you have them, upload them!

Say hello to Viddler’s Simple Player

Published March 28, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Announcements

You may have seen this new player around the Internets, on our new front page, or perhaps inside of our video commenting plugin for Wordpress, but we just haven’t had the chance to announce it yet.

Say hello to Viddler’s Simple Player.

Thanks to our friend Brad Garland (friend: thegarlandgroup) and his skiing video, you’re able to see the great quality and simplicity of this new player. If you’d like, you can swap this out to view a few great macro photos (link will only work on our blog) taken by another Viddler.

Don’t need all of the extra, yet awesome, features of our full player? Now you have a choice. Our Simple Player removes all of the fluff and cuts right to the video in a compact, easy-to-use, brand new interface.

How to use the Simple Player

Soon, but not yet, the simple player will be an option here on Viddler.com wherever you find the normal embed code. But for now, all you need to do is change the points in the HTML embed code where it says /player/ to /simple/. This occurs in two locations.

Here is an example embed code for the above video.

Steps to embed simple player: On the main video page for the above video, click MENU > Embed, and copy the embed code. Change the word “player” in two places, to “simple”, and you’re all set. We’re hoping to have new embed options available through our site very soon and we’ll let you know when that happens.

Take note of the word “simple” in the embed code, which is the only change! If you need any help getting this setup for yourself, just let us know in the comments!

“Flow Rida” - baby style

Published March 28, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Flow Rida, by Low featuring T-Pain, is played on the radio nonstop, the video runs on MTV as often as, well, as often as MTV runs music videos nowadays, and has pretty much taken over the ringtone top spot.

So why not feature a video with fellow Viddler Chris Harrison’s (friend: cdharrison) kid singing the song?

Cute kid. One of the best uses of Viddler I’ve seen in a long time. Thanks for sharing Chris!

Quick Fork: Deviled Eggs!

Published March 26, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Easter has come and gone and so now you might be stuck with a ton of eggs! Scott and Marisa, from ForkYouTV (friend: blankbaby), say: “Devil those eggs!”. Here is Quick Fork: Evil Eggs as today’s featured video (and recipe below).

Here is the recipe, courtesy of ForkYou:

1 dozen eggs, hard boiled, cooled and shelled
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons mustard
salt and pepper to taste
paprika for dusting

Cut eggs lengthwise, remove yolks to bowl and place empty white halves on a plate or platter. Take bowl of yolks and work in mayonnaise and mustard with a fork until it is creamy and fairly smooth. Adjust the amount of mayonnaise according to your consistency preference, I prefer a fairly stiff yolk mixture, so I use less. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Fill hollow whites with a spoonful of yolks. You can also do this with a piping bag, but I prefer the rustic look that spooning it in gives. Top with a sprinkling of paprika and serve.

Thanks to ForkYou for always keeping us fed and entertained! Be sure to check out ForkYou’s website where you can see much longer episodes including one’s taped in front of a live studio audience!

Gary Vaynerchuk: “Stop lying to yourself”

Published March 25, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

Gary Vaynerchuk, friend and host of WineLibraryTV, does 120-seconds about something else from his personal web site. In today’s featured video Gary talks about being true to yourself, do what you love but also do what you know you can do and stop lying to yourself.

He gives his own examples of this, but I have a few that I can think of. Sometimes I find that people do not properly recognize their limitations. We all have them and to ignore them is folly. If you find yourself in a situation where your asked or expected to do something that you can’t do, or where you know someone else could do it better, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Here’s Gary with more:

I’m not so sure I agree with him about having lofty goals or “building the next ______” because I feel anyone can do anything so long as they put their mind to it. But, sometimes people do bite off more than they can chew and end up failing when really they just set themself up for the failure.

Great, great advice Gary - keep up these videos!

How to build a bomb - Episode 3

Published March 23, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Featured

No, we won’t be telling you how to built a real bomb - though you can see me playing with a Works Bomb a while ago - no, this is a team of guys (friend: giantbomb) building the next generation game reviews site. “How to build a bomb” is a video podcast cataloging this process and episode 3 deals with sketching out the layout for the site, as well as setting off a flea bomb to get rid of an infestation.

For more information on who is behind the site (and I think most of you know these guys already) and what it is going to be able to do, take a look at their welcome post.

We Viddlers are looking forward to watching this new community get built from the ground up, and we’re hoping we can be a part of it. Hope you guys were able to get rid of those bites on your ankles!
