Gas vs. Charcoal Grills

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 31, 2008

A lot of us are trying to live green these days, but have you considered how your summer grilling impacts the environment? Titan Greens explains the environmental difference between the newer gas grills and using those classic charcoal grills. You can watch the video to find out which is more environmentally friendly.

Does this change the way you want to grill? Does knowing that one of these grills releases twice as much bad stuff into our atmosphere deter you from using that method of grilling? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

It’s time to VOTE for your 5Things winner!!

Posted in Announcements, Contests, Community Spotlight by Brandice on July 30, 2008

Hey! You! It’s vital that you get over to our 5Things group (or just watch below) and favorite all the videos that you like so that we can choose a final winner. I’m very sad to see that only a few Viddler users have been actually favoriting the videos that they like, and without your votes, how will we pick a clear winner? Start voting, Viddlers!!

The vidget below will play all the 5Things videos, and if you click on a video while it’s playing, it will take you to that video’s page, where you can then comment on and favorite (click the star to the right of the video title) the videos you enjoy.

If you see a video you really like, share it with others! Get other people voting, and we’ll announce the lucky winners on Friday. Edwin, who created this group, is choosing the finalists for the judges’ pick, and he and I will be announcing our final decision on Friday as well!

Watch! Vote! Don’t make me come over there!

Comic Con 2008 Coverage

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 30, 2008

Sarah of Pop17 recently went to Comic Con in San Diego and a got a lot of great footage of what was apparently an awesome event, and Rocketboom featured her coverage.

Did anyone of you get to go to Comic Con? Mahalo Daily also got some great footage of the event, including interviews with Robert Rodriguez, Felicia Day, and Stan Lee, and
reviews of the J.J. Abrams Fringe Pilot.

Earthquake in SoCal

Posted in Community Spotlight by Brandice on July 29, 2008

As you may have heard, an earthquake hit SoCal today and Twitter has been buzzing (some Twitters have even left images in my head that will never go away), and Daynah caught some footage of the aftermath in the Science Library at UC Riverside.

From her video description:

“About 200 (if not more) books fell off the top shelves on the 3rd floor. About 100 or so fell from the second floor. No damage (that I know of) from the first.”

Were you affected by the quake? We hope that everyone near that area is okay.

Comedian Tom Papa Interview

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 29, 2008

Veronica of WatchMojo caught comedian Tom Papa before a show for an interview. It seems that Tom is also the President of the United States and calls his wife “the horny snowman.” Very interesting fella, and Veronica did a great interview.

Grocery School : Reading Beer Labels

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 28, 2008

We’ve got a lot of great beer-related shows here at Viddler, but do you know your basic beer types? Grocery School explains the basic beer types (lager and ale) and how to find certain flavors in certain beers, which is helpful if you’re looking to try a new brew, or if you wondering if you’ll enjoy the beers reviewed on Two Guys on Beer or BeerTap TV.

What’s your favorite beer? Leave your favorite brews in the comments (I enjoy Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat), and if you like Sarah East’s straightforward, helpful description in the area of food, make sure to hit up the Grocery School profile and click that “Subscribe” button so that you won’t miss an episode!

It’s National Crème Brulée Day

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 27, 2008

Happy National Crème Brulée Day, all. Who’s making me some tasty dessert??

Jay of FoodRants compares what he calls “the manliest of desserts” to the 1994 Super Bowl between the San Diego Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard crème brulée called “manly,” nor heard the little dish it comes in compared to a football stadium, but to each his own in terms of dessert enjoyment rituals. I just want someone to go make me some.

First Person Arts National Story Competition

Posted in Announcements, Contests, Community Spotlight by Brandice on July 26, 2008

Do you know about the First Person Impressions competition that’s running right now, with a video category that involves Viddler submissions?

It’s great opportunity for you use your Viddler skills to win prizes! Here are the details, straight from First Person Arts:

Each day countless stories unfold. Take a real life experience of your own and tell it in a way that only you can. Craft your story with words, photos or video. Make the ordinary magical, or the exotic familiar. Shock us, amaze us or make us pause to reflect. The only rule is that it’s real.

All entries must be new works that have not previously been published, exhibited or screened in the US.

Film: up to 5 minutes (upload privately to Viddler)
Essay: 1500 words or less
Photography: up to 5 images

The top three winning entries in each category will be presented at the First Person Festival of Memoir and Documentary Art at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, PA, November 12-16, 2008.

Monetary prizes for each category:
1st place - $500
2nd place - $100
3rd place - $50

Cost for entry is $10.

There are just a few weeks left in the competition and, according the Andrew at First Person Arts, they are still actively looking for more submissions, so your chances are still quite good. Go tell your story in a creative way, and see if it wins you some fame (and dough)!

The Social Web TV

Posted in Featured by Brandice on July 26, 2008

Have you checked out The Social Web TV (group: thesocialwebtv)? By their own description, the show is “about explaining what’s going on in the fight to make sure you have control of your data, your content, and your privacy — and the freedom to access your stuff from all over the Web.

As someone who’s very interested in the conversation about “opening” the web and is curious about the announcement of Facebook Connect, I found this episode (live from F8!) full of great discussion about where we’re headed on the net with Open ID, Facebook Connect, and similar efforts by a lot of sites to allow users to bring their identities with them wherever they go.

What do you think about Facebook Connect? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
