Inglourious Basterds Reviews

Published August 30, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

I don’t often see movies at the cinema, so reviews from my peers help me filter out what’s good and what’s not because I trust their judgment.

There’s quite a few movies at the cinemas right now that have been getting some great reviews from critics (whom don’t usually give reviews suited to my taste in film) and consumers alike. Up, District 9, and Inglourious Basterds to name three. The last one, Inglourious Basterds, has had some great reviews from the Viddler community.

Here’s four reviews of Inglourious Basterds that may persuade you to go out and see it (if you haven’t yet):

Walt Mossberg Reviews Snow Leopard

Published August 28, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

Today is release day. Yes, Apple fans have copies of Snow Leopard (the latest version of the Mac OS X operating system) installed on their computer, and there’s unboxing/first look videos being uploaded left and right.

Who better to give their thoughts on this refined upgrade than Walt Mossberg (in puppet form). Though, there might be a few glitches.

If you still haven’t bought your copy of Snow Leopard, then run along and go do that.

To find out more about these puppets check out The Rant Puppets (the weekly show where impassioned puppets talk about  things that are important to them), Hoggworks Studios (the creators of the puppets and various shows), and follow @dotboom (the guy who created Hoggworks).

Find Your Chicken Finger Bacon Pizza Phone

Published August 27, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

Misplace your cell phone? Don’t have a MobileMe account to find your iPhone with? No worries! Awesomeology (subscribe) shows you how to find it with a simple website.

Wait, ‘awesomeology’? Is that a real word? Answer: Not technically. But if it were it would mean the study of pure awesomeness! And that’s just what this show is about. Walt Breuninger hosts and produces the show several times a week. Rather, he did. Back in June he had to change some time commitments and Awesomeology had to end (for now). More about the show ending.

Don’t fret though. Walt produced almost 90 awesome episodes of the show, so if you’ve never seen it before you’ll have enough awesome short content to keep you entertained for days!

Other awesome things in this episode: Chicken Finger Bacon Pizza, Giant Post-It Notes, and discover the art of photobombing (Brian Shaler is very good at this).

Regardless of the show ending (again, ‘for now’), Walt will still be providing awesome links and sites via his Google Reader and Twitter.

Words in this post containing the word awesome: 9

Snuggie Unboxing (Comprehensive)

Published August 25, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

Everyone and their mom, cat, and even those with pet wombats have seen the commercials on television for the Snuggie. It’s that giant blue blanket that you place on the front of your body with your arms through to sleeves so that you can reach the remote control at home or a foul ball at a baseball game without having to remove the blanket. Yup, it gives you the freedom you need to stay warm and use your hands at the same time.

You’ve seen the commercial, but have you seen a Snuggie unboxing? Perhaps you don’t need a Snuggie because you’re content with your sweatshirt. Well, Jason has made a comprehensive unboxing video for us all to see.

You may remember Jason (friend him up!) from his incredibly epic music video — “Viddlerizer” — or possibly his videos on his NaNoWriMo (group) progress every year. Otherwise, if you’re new to Jason’s work, then you may now affectionately know him as the ‘Snuggie Unboxing guy’.

I do believe that’s the best unboxing video I’ve ever seen! Very detailed and informative. I’m glad they included the free pocket light; I was afraid it wasn’t in there for a moment.

How to Write a Book Title

Published August 23, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

With services like Amazon, PayPal, and eBay it’s easier than ever to sell your own products online. You can even use content management systems like WordPress or Squarespace to create your own store.

I know many authors which have changed the book publishing business thanks to their creative ways to brand their writings. Scott Sigler pioneered the podcast novel (podiobook) in 2005. Other fantastic authors J.C. Hutchins, Mur Lafferty, Evo Terra, and Tee Morris followed close behind Scott and all built huge fan-bases. Now every one of the aforementioned authors is published by large and independent publishers.

Starting with the podiobook route isn’t for everyone though. Brandice Schnabel — famed member of the Viddler community — recently published her collection of poems, entitled Columbus Groove, independently.

Do you wish to publish your book/novel/biography too? I mean, why not share your creation with the world and make some money from it too. Get Published TV (subscribe) is a show released every weekday about the process of publishing your own book. Host, Dale Beaumont, is an author that has self-published fifteen books since 2005, and published his first one when he was 19. He’s also an international speaker and entrepreneur.

There’s already almost 50 episodes of Get Published TV, so if there’s any aspect of the publishing process you need assistance with, no doubt Dale has discussed it (or will in future episodes).

In this episode Dale introduces the importance of choosing a good book title for your book.

The episodes following this one continue the discussion on book titles. Watch episode #38 and #39 on Get Published TV.

Find out more about Get Published TV in the FAQ section on the website. You can follow the show on Twitter and join the fan page on Facebook.

CO-OP brings the doughnuts!

Published August 22, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

CO-OP is giddy. Let me just state that from the get-go.

Originally known as The 1UP Show — which ran from 2005-2008 on 1up.com — CO-OP (subscribe) is a weekly video podcast featuring gamers hanging out with their peers and discussing the modern gaming culture. It’s inspired by real conversations; there’s no rating systems; no talking heads; just talkin’ ’bout the games.

If you haven’t seen The 1UP Show or CO-OP before, then a good place to get started is episode one of CO-OP. In that episode you’ll be introduced to the members of Area 5 and get right in to some serious chit chat on Noby Noby Boy and Killzone 2.

As for this feature, I decided to go with a more recent episode and it’s as entertaining as all the episodes are! The guys converse about a great Space Invaders app for the iPhone/iPod Touch, a remake of Tales of Monkey Island for the PC, and the latest Ghostbusters game.

You may be thinking: ‘Whoa! That was an awesome episode of CO-OP!’ Nice pick. You’ll be happy to know that they’re ALL like that; hilarious and usually involving food. I really love how they mention the names of all the places they eat. I’m writing them all down, so I can eat at those places when I next visit San Francisco.

As for the gaming, uhh, the likeness of the characters in the Ghostbusters game looked almost like shots from the original film. Technology is very close to reaching the point where real life and animation have a seamless transition.

You can find all the Twitter accounts of the Area 5 team and more ways to connect with them at Area5.tv.

Meals on a budget

Published August 20, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

Do you have about 30 minutes to spare? Because I have some videos of food that will make you drool. I’m finding it difficult to decide which one I’m going to put in this post. Therefore, I’m going to put two in here.

Okay, I might be just a little over-excited about these videos. I’ll try and remain calm.

Budget Friendly Cooking (subscribe — you gotta subscribe and watch all the videos when you have time!) is a weekly cooking show featuring simple guides to preparing great meals on a budget. You won’t see anything like Ramen noodles on this show, but the recipes will be about as simple as making Ramen. Katie Kotecki, the host, states that she’s by no means a gourmet chef, but she’s a passionate, everyday chef that knows how to save money in the kitchen.

For this episode Katie prepares a Spicy Chicken with Mushroom and Rice. The four ingredients are in the name of the recipe; Cajun spices , diced chicken breast, cream of mushroom soup, and instant white rice. Of course you could spice things up some more by changing to brown rice of maybe using a different meat. Either way, this is a great dish that can feed one person or a family. Nom!

If you have more of a sweet tooth, then you’ll love the snickerdoodle cookies Katie makes in the next episode. Read on to watch some snickerdoodle goodness.

NFS Shift

Published August 19, 2009 by djsteen in Featured

NFSS-PorscheNeed For Speed: Shift. It’s slated for release in the U.S. on the 15th of September, 2009; 17th Sept for the U.K. This release is one of the most hyped in all of the Need For Speed games. Electronic Arts has released countless video featuring trailers, car profiles, track details, behind the scenes with professional racing drivers, and much more.

In some of the videos I honestly can’t tell if there are real cars mixed in with the animations. That’s how realistic parts of the game look. It’s exactly what you’d expect to see on the Blu-Ray discs the game will be available on (as well as DVD, UMD, and digital downloads via the Internet connection on your console).

This version of the game — which is part of a 3-part series along with Need for Speed: Nitro and Need for Speed: World Online — focuses less on the street racing aspect and more on emulating the driver experience. It’s a racing game built by racers for racers. Hence, the various videos featuring professional racers talking about their experiences.

Wowzers! I’m not much of a gamer, but I can’t wait to play this game the first chance I get! I have quite the need for speeeeed. Do you?

Continue on to watch more NFS Shift pre-launch videos and get info about how to unlock a BMW E92 M3 GT2 by pre-ordering the game.
