Hot remixes/raps by nonelikejoshua

Published June 4, 2010 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight,Featured

Something fun for Friday. Viddler member nonelikejoshua puts together some really great remixes that he raps to. This one, which features a track from Ronald Jenkees (who is also a Viddler), is particularly great.

Thanks to nonelikejoshua for sharing his remixes with us. We’ve put one up on the frontpage for the day.

Colin on Wine Library TV on the iPad

Published May 28, 2010 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight

I’ve been a fan of Wine Library TV since Episode 7. Shortly after that WLTV’s host Gary Vaynerchuk and I worked together on several projects. Next I came and started here at Viddler in early 2007 and, naturally, asked Gary to come with me (he’s an Advisory Board Member and active user of Viddler with his own personal account, Wine Library TV, Obsessed TV and Gourmet Library.)

That is why I am extremely proud to announce that I’m on today’s episode of Wine Library TV with my good friend Gary drinking some excellent Port wine. I’m also proud to announce that Wine Library TV is now available, from their site, on the iPad and iPhone thanks to Viddler’s still-in-beta HTML 5 support.

Thanks for working so closely with me over the last few years Gary and for having me on the show.

Bing! commercials

Published May 20, 2010 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight

After giving Bing a try for a few weeks (via Google Chrome no less) I found it to be pretty great. Their commercials aren’t half bad either. The latest one, about NYC, is pretty good simply because it is voiced by Modern Family‘s own Ty Burrell.

There are a few other commercials too. Go forth and Bing!

Howdy Viddlerians!

No doubt you’ve been inundated with tweets, e-mails, and feeds containing those big four letters — SXSW. It’s on again!

Rachel (Community Support) and I are heading to Austin, Texas, to attend the interactive portion of the event, and we’re excited to hang out with you all again!

Just like last year we’ll be giving away some Viddler goodies, recording tons of video in an around SXSW, and having lots of fun!

We also have a huge box of candy, chocolates, and other treats. Keep an eye on the following Twitter accounts to find out where we are and you’ll be able to pick up some of our goodies: @Viddler, @djsteen, @heyitsRachel.

Of course, all the best videos from SXSW will be at sxswvideos.com — tag your videos with ‘sxsw’ for your video to appear on there.

See you all there!

Zack Follett Vloggin’ + #Haiti Relief Donations

Published January 21, 2010 by djsteen in Community Spotlight,Featured

Welcome to the “Zack Attack”! 22-year-old Zack Follett (friend him up!) is an American football linebacker for the Detroit Lions. He previously played for the California Golden Bears until around mid-2009.

Zack just started video blogging at the beginning of 2010 and he’s been keeping it legit! First and foremost, he has rocked out to music in every video so far; a good beat makes for a solid video. He’s also about to sell a couple of Super Bowl XLIV that will be accompanied by a limited edition Super Bowl artwork created by Zack himself. Every single penny of the sale will be donated to the Haitian relief efforts. (All details of the sale will be updated here when they’re available.)

Zack shows some of his past artworks and a sneak peek at his Super Bowl piece in his video (after the jump). Continue reading “Zack Follett Vloggin’ + #Haiti Relief Donations” »

21st Anniversary of Mayo

Published December 13, 2009 by djsteen in Community Spotlight,Featured

Birthday Treats by heyitsRachel on FlickrToday is an exciting day. It’s Sunday the 13th. That almost sounds like Friday the 13th. Let’s turn this lazy Sunday into a spooky, rockin’ Sunday. Rockin’ because it’s Rachel’s 21st birthday. Spooky because she watches Charmed religiously; sexy witches are spooky, right?

Yes, our giddy Community Support gal, Rachel Mayo (friend her up!), clicked over another year today. *click* Hear that?

As you know, we here at Viddler kind of have a passion for Video. Kind of? Um, it flows in our veins, baby! So, naturally, one of our awesome community members, Pasquale (friend him up!), made a video in honor of this particular day. He’s an Australian living in Canada, so you’ll soon be swooning over his accent as he makes everyone aware of Rachel’s birthday.

Wow! All those potential gifts sure were shiny!

Happy Birthday Rachel from the entire Viddler team and community. Giddy giddy!

Do you have a friend’s birthday coming up soon? What better way to wish him/her a wonderful birthday than through the medium of video. If you’d like to surprise a friend with a fun, collaborative birthday video, then feel free to contact me and I can help you get it organized.

Halloween Roundup

Published October 31, 2009 by djsteen in Community Spotlight,Featured

Halloween is tonight. Are you excited? I’ve heard many people describe it as “the most exciting holiday of the year”. I wholeheartedly agree! It’s the only day of the year in which it’s socially acceptable (for those who don’t like to break the rules) to dress in costume, scare the living daylights out of people, eat candy while walking around the neighborhood, and meet strangers on their doorstep. That is a pretty rad day, in my opinion!

The origins of Halloween are quite different than how it is celebrated these days. Here’s an excerpt from History.com about its early traditions.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

In the 1800s immigrants from Europe brought their Halloween traditions over to America and towards the end of that century there was a movement to shape Halloween in to more of a holiday involving community and neighborly bonding rather than spooky ghost stories.

As you know, Halloween is now a mix of all the traditions of previous generations, and has been cleverly monetized by candy/chocolate companies as well as costume shops. You can discover more about the holiday on Wikipedia.

I’ve compiled a bunch of Halloween tips, tricks (obviously!), fun, and spooks. Enjoy!

Nalts (subscribe) made a collaboration with Iggy35 and DavideoDesign about some tips to make your Halloween extra spooky. (Pay attention to the subtitles.)

More Halloween cuteness, tips, and fun after the jump.

How-to: Halloween Pumpkin Bats for Kids

Published October 29, 2009 by djsteen in Community Spotlight,Featured

Halloween is only a couple of days away. Many of my American friends have told me that it’s their favorite holiday of the year. More than Christmas. I would probably agree, but in Australia (I’m Australian, in case you didn’t know) the celebration of Halloween rather patchy. Some suburbs participate, some don’t. It can even be down to a house-by-house basis. It’s unfortunate.

If you’re someone that happens to leave things until the last possible minute, well I’m giving you a couple days to get some decorations together. Kmart Design (subscribe) has a quick and dirty (depending how much glue you cover yourself in) tip on how to make a mini pumpkin bat in a few simple steps. Awesome for the kids; big and small!

What fun crafts do you create for Halloween?

Woot’s Real Actual Field Test: Waterproof Camera

Published October 9, 2009 by djsteen in Community Spotlight,Featured

There are many Internet retailers that offer only a single type of product every day. Why would a retailer restrict themselves to selling one type of product daily? Because they offer extravagant discounts on these items.

woot (subscribe to their shenanigans) runs several websites that offer just one product every day. Typically, said product sells out before most people arrive at work because new offers are available at midnight (U.S. Central Time) and there’s a lot of people awake at that time (especially in Europe and Australasia).

So what’s on offer? Well, today (October 9th, 2009), there’s the Breville 15-Bar Die-Cast Espresso & Cappuccino Maker with Knocchi Knock Box. That’s about the same amount of syllables as the average Starbucks order. ;)

That’s not all though! Steak knives! Nah, just kidding. As I said, woot operated a slew of one-day offers. There’s also shirt.woot, wine.woot, kids.woot, and sellout.woot. Each offers a unique item each day in the category of the subdomain. sellout.woot is essentially the same as woot.com — just a different product and it’s sold in partnership with Yahoo! Shopping.

woot doesn’t just offer great discounted products. They also want to offer stupendous customer service. Recently, they have started offering video product reviews and tests so that you if what you bought on woot was really worth it. Or, well, what you might buy on woot. I digress; watch the video.

Alright, so that was more entertaining that helpful. Hopefully you didn’t purchase that camera back in 2006. How about testing the Energizer Hardcase Tactical Flashlight? Watch the video. It puts that flashlights to tests even MacGyver would be proud of.

The easiest way to find out what the latest item available on woot’s websites is to follow the respective Twitter account: @woot, @wootshirt, @wootwine, @wootkids, @wootsellout, and for the exciting Woot-Offs there’s @wootoff.

Enjoy yelling “woooooot!” when on your next woot purchase. Gosh, I’m wooted out!
