Contest: UmbrellaToday

Published November 19, 2008 by djsteen in Contests

A while ago I discovered the website Umbrella Today. It simply asks you for your zip code and determines whether the weather in your area will require you to bring an umbrella with you.

It’s a cool idea, but so is a window. Everyone has a window, right?

The requirement for this contest is to upload a video between now and the 6th of December, 2008, stating whether or not you need an umbrella in your town right now. This should be fun for all the folks up north experiencing snow squalls. Add your videos to the UmbrellaToday group.

Check out my video below for more information and find out if I need an umbrella in Phoenix, Arizona, right now.

Did I mention you could win an umbrella just for entering this contest? Yeah, giddy!

Do you have a radical idea for a contest on Viddler? Send me a message and let me know.

Jacob’s best Halloween costume!

Published October 7, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight,Contests,Featured

You may recall that I asked a question of those of you participate in the Halloween vids… “What was your best Halloween costume?”

Jacobburke has gone and given me a heart attack with the first video response, with a costume involved not only being topless, but wearing quite a fancy skirt as well. Nothing but pure AWESOME.

October – Trick or Treat Month

Published October 1, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Announcements,Community Spotlight,Contests

October is here, which (for a lot of us) means candy corn, way too many people dressed in pointy black hats or big white sheets, ghost stories, hay rides, and me peeing my pants in at least one haunted house because I am terrified of the dark, but someone always talks me into it. Halloween’s coming!

What it also means is that for the entire month of October, I will be looking for Halloween-related videos in the Trick or Treat group and featuring them via Twitter and in the Community Spotlight.

Here’s an example of a question you could answer for a Trick or Treat video:

Other questions or topics you could cover for Trick or Treat month:

  • What is the best costume you ever had for Halloween?
  • Tell us your favorite ghost story!
  • Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not?
  • Candy corn… gross or delicious?
  • What will be your Halloween costume this year? (Please show on camera!)
  • Do you give out candy for trick or treating?
  • Favorite horror movie… what’s yours?
  • Have you ever worn a costume that totally bombed?
  • Pumpkin carving demonstrations!
  • Black cats… are you superstitious?

So, here’s the deal –

  • Join the group.
  • Record or upload a Halloween-related video!
  • Tag video with “trickortreat” and add it to the group.

Let the fun begin! I want to see costumes and carved pumpkins, hear great stories about Halloween adventures and misadventures, and somebody has got to know a really good ghost story that they’re willing to tell with a spooky flashlight on camera. Bring on the spooky month of ghouls and goblins!

Some of them have been really amazing, and I’ll be featuring all entries in the Community Spotlight section of the blog up until September 1st. Favorite and leave comments on the videos you really enjoy.

GO VOTE! Winner will be announced Tuesday evening!

Here’s the next entry on my list of entries left to blog… Claire (cmh05u) wanted to be everything!

JustJason has contributed his entry for the August Viddler vidchallenge and it’s got some great music to it, not to mention a great message at the end. Watch the video to see if Jason ended up being any of the things he imagined when he was a kid, and hear about what he does now.

OhDoctah is living his dream

Published August 15, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight,Contests

OhDoctah didn’t have a concrete career plan when he was young, but he is clearly living his own personal dream and wears a lot of hats in terms of what he “does” now that he’s grown up. Great video submission for the August Viddler vidchallenge, and a great outlook on life. Thanks for sharing!

5Things Winner Announcement!

Published August 1, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Announcements,Contests

It’s time to announce the very spiffy winners of the 5Things challenge for the month of July here at Viddler!

A whopping 44 videos were created and added to the 5Things group in July, all full of really interesting/unknown/weird/quirky/random tidbits about dozens of our users. You can see the player that displays all of the videos with “5things” tag here. I’ve had a lot of fun learning some really crazy things about all of you!

Without further ado, the big prize for the most favorited video goes to NatLiveTV with a whopping 16 votes:

Nat’s win was pretty straightforward (and she won in rapid time, getting more favorites in a much shorter period of time than our runners-up… impressive!), and then for the Judges’ Pick, the finalists were chosen by Edwinv (creator of the challenge). Today he and I deliberated to decide on a winner.

There were a ton of great videos, and the list of finalists was a long one, but we decided the video worthy of the second tee and sticker was definitely Brandon Bautista‘s. Brandon’s 5 Things included Ghostbusters, some fantastic dancing, a couple great jobs (current and former) and an impression that more than one user told me “rocked.” Edwin and I were both in total agreement that this video deserved props:

So, that’s it, right?

Nope! We had another video that’s worthy of mentioning as a bonus Judges’ Pick, uploaded on the very last day by a brand new Viddler user. WinMcDonald made this very special 5 Things video for her grandson and shared it with the group.

What’s special about this video is that it’s a lovely way of sharing memories with one’s grandchildren and one of the Viddler staff brought it to my attention today that Winnie is our most senior Viddler user, which is really cool! I’d like to see more of you helping your parents and grandparents get into video, so that they can all share stories about themselves like Winnie has.

Props to Crepehanger for helping her mother to sign up for Viddler and make this clip for her grandson:

All the winners, please contact me via Viddler message with your mailing address and t-shirt size and all three of you will be showered with Viddler goodies!

Stay tuned for Monday, when I will be announcing August’s video challenge! It’s a fun one!!
