Viddler Mobile Video Support

Published July 11, 2011 by Ian Borg in Customer Support,Using Viddler

Viddler Business accounts support many of today’s mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, newer BlackBerry, and Android devices. This article will let you know just how easy it is to make all of your videos mobile.

Check Account Settings

By default, Business accounts have Mobile Device encoding support enabled. To make sure they are on, visit your Encoding settings.

If you’ve just turned these settings to “On” You will want to click the “Re-encode” button, which will make mobile-compatible versions of files that do not currently have them.

You may also want to head over to your Sharing & email settingsand change your default embed code. We recommend changing over to the “iframe” version, but if you need advanced features or your content management system has issues with iframes, you should choose “Flash with HTML5 Mobile Fallback”, note however, that this method doesn’t work on all devices.

Embedding

Embedding is just as easy as before. Just choose the proper embed code for your situation (iframe or “Flash with HTML5 Mobile Fallback”), and insert that code on to your site:

How to: Safely Upgrade to New AS3 Player

Published July 6, 2011 by Ian Borg in Customer Support,Using Viddler

Business clients have the ability to upgrade to our next generation of video player, which contains both new and enhancements of existing features.

Meet the New Player:

Full

Simple

Features of the New Player:

  • Completley Rewritten using ActionScript 3 – Makes the player more reliable
  • Improved Support for 3rd party Services—Including LiveRail and ComScore
  • The Ability to build your own player skins, or go chromeless
  • Backwards Compatibility – It’s not necessary to update your embed codes when you switch. All of your current embed codes will update to the new player
  • Risk-Free! For now, you are able to switch between the two player types

How to Upgrade:

Go to http://viddler.com/player-upgrade, and choose “Upgrade my players now!”, then click “Save Upgrade Choice” – It could take a few hours for the change to go through.

After Upgrade Checklist:

You may want to consider looking at the following things, just to make sure everything went as planned:

  • Check to confirm embedded players are loading – Check at least a few, and if you use multiple types of players (Full, simple) check at least one of each type.
  • Check player colors. Some upgraded configurations result in the player controls appearing hidden on mouse-over (depending on the background color)
  • If you do experience issues, please report it to our support team and/or feel free to downgrade using the same form you used to upgrade.

We CAN handle your traffic!

Published April 5, 2011 by Colin Devroe in Customer Support

Every single day we’re seeing new businesses begin to see the benefits of online video and many are using Viddler to help them take advantage of this exciting new medium.

One of the questions that many newcomers have is: “What if our videos become popular, can you handle our traffic?” To this we ultimately say, in the style of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men…

Let me explain why and back it up with some numbers. Since our launch in late-2006 Viddler has been built for speed and scale. Our systems, software, and website have always been made with these two underlying requirements in mind. Even when we only had a few customers we knew that, one day, our customers would need to serve millions upon millions of impressions without ever noticing a hiccup in speed.

And for nearly 5 years now this has happened many, many times over. Only 6 months after we launched our website we were serving a million impressions per day (I remember freaking out in San Francisco when I found out).

Today we have thousands of business customers, both big and small, many of which are very high traffic websites like FailBlog, Engadget, and Gawker. We’re now in the business of providing videos to millions upon millions of viewers daily.

Here are some interesting stats… We see over 133 people pressing play at the same time. That may not sound like a lot at first, but imagine this happening 24hours a day / 7days a week. At times we’re serving over 1,500 requests per second which includes serving videos to desktop computers, mobile phones, tablet devices like the iPad, and TVs all over the globe. Oh, and let’s not forget the encoding of many thousands of videos per day into multiple formats.

We’re very proud of Viddler and what we are able to do for our customers on a daily basis. We take great pride in being able to serve both the very high traffic websites as well as the small businesses that want to use online video to advertise their business and serve their customers. We’re constantly investing in improvements of our own platform. We’ve just recently made our biggest investment in the history of our company in architecture that we will be bringing live later this year (more on this soon).

Yes, we can handle your traffic. And we’d love to help.

Viddler Customer Support is more than just answering tech questions.

Bernie, Softball All-Star

Bernie, Softball All-Star

Working for a small company has many benefits. Team members are more like family than just “coworkers”, we can move more quickly as a company when making decisions and getting things done and we all have the opportunity to wear many different hats everyday.

Here at Viddler it is no different. We have very strong relationships with each other, our customers and our community as a whole. We are able to be very nimble and move fast when we see an emerging technology that we feel will benefit our users.

The best benefit of working at Viddler for me is that I have the chance do many different “jobs” every single day. It makes “work” fun. Our Customer Support team (which is Bryan and Bernie (that’s me) right now) handle many more tasks than simply answering our customer’s questions.

For example; if you recently signed up for a B2B account you more than likely got a call from Bryan to ask if you had any questions or if you would like a tour of your Viddler account. Bryan also handles confirming business accounts and payment collections. Besides being the main customer support contact for some of our larger B2B accounts, I also handle most of the Quality Assurance (or bug testing) on new tools for us to use to help you. I also work with potential clients to see if Viddler is the correct solution for them and explain the capabilities of Viddler and our API.  And finally I help people get setup for advertising campaigns on Viddler.

Excellent customer support, by answering threads in our forums and promptly replying to support tickets and emails, will always be the primary focus for Bryan and I. But putting on a different hat now and then keeps things fresh and fun for us day-to-day.
