Browser Support

Published January 9, 2012 by Jeff Johns in Announcements,Using Viddler

To better serve our customers both in functionality and security we have made some browser support decisions for 2012. While you can always access Viddler from a PC, Mac or Linux we have tightened up a support plan for browsers.

Viddler will support the current stable release of a browser and the prior version. This will start 6 months after the newest stable release has been published.

Example: if IE version ‘x’ comes out tomorrow, we will continue to support and test the previous version of IE for the next 6 months and we will make sure our site works in full in IE version ‘x’ by the time we drop testing for the previous version. This does not mean the site will cease to work with the previous version, just that we are not fully testing the previous version any longer.

We have made these decisions so that we can provide our customers with the best platform in all current major browsers.

* We recommend using a supported browser to get all of Viddler’s newest features:

* These were the current browsers and versions as of January 9th, 2012.

Developers: Flash Video Recorder

Published September 19, 2011 by Ian Borg in Development,Using Viddler

Viddler’s Flash video recorder makes it very simple to allow a user to record video straight to Viddler using their webcam on their computer. This process bypasses Viddler’s uploading and encoding procedures and recorded videos are available immediately after recording for playback.

The process to record a video

  1. Retrieve a Viddler record token
  2. Put the token in the recorder’s embed code
  3. (optional) Edit the details of the video after the user hits save

For a more detailed view of this process see our document entitled: How to: Record with Webcam.

Available Flashvars

  • recordToken – (required) unique token needed to record
  • permalink – Used as the finished video’s permalink after recording
  • maxlength – (in seconds) sets a custom max length of a recorded footage.
  • audioOnly – “Y”, “1?, “T” values will switch recorder in “audio-only” mode. No video data will be saved.
  • noUI – “Y”, “1?, “T” values will tell the recorder not to show the bottom control bar interface.
  • recQuality – “H”, “M”, “L” values will set quality to High, Medium and Low, respectively, and will cause the initial quality selector not to be shown.
  • enableCallbacks – “Y”, “1?, “T” to turn on callbacks

Control the recorder using JavaScript

If you’d like to control the player using JavaScript instead of the Flash recorder’s default user interface you can do that. Here are the functions that are currently available.

  • doStartRecord() – start the recording
  • doStopRecord() – stop recording
  • doDelRecord() – delete recorded footage
  • doSaveRecord() – save the footage

JavaScript callbacks

If you’d like to listen in to what the Flash recorder is doing you can use the following JavaScript callbacks.

  • recordConnected() when recorder swf connects to the recording service
  • recordAuthorised() when recorder swf authorises it’s record token successfully
  • recordStopped() when user stops recording
  • recordDeleted() when user decides to delete the footage and re-record.
  • recordSave() when user decides to save video (yet before the request is sent to the server for actual processing)

In-Video Commenting and Tagging – Make Your Online Video Interactive, Social, and Engaging

Published September 15, 2011 by Ian Borg in Using Viddler

Viddler’s in-video tagging and commenting feature allows you and your viewers to interact within the video. By using our full player, you are given the option to leave a text or video comment and a tag right on the video timeline. By making your video public, you give your viewers the ability to interact with your videos by leaving comments or even video comments directly on the timeline. Video comments are recorded directly from your webcam so they appear instantly with no encoding time. In order to segment your video based off of the content being displayed, tags are a great way to organize your video into chapters. Talking about your product in the video, what a great time to leave a link to your product landing page directly on the timeline. All tags and comments are than cataloged below the video so they can be easily followed. Use your creativity to utilize the feature in countless ways. Watch the video below for a full description and test out leaving a comment!

Beckinfield’s interesting use of Viddler’s JavaScript Callbacks

Published August 8, 2011 by Colin Devroe in Using Viddler

Our Flash video player can call a JavaScript function for many of the events that happen before, during, and after playback. We call these JavaScript callbacks and they are part of The Viddler Player JavaScript Framework.

For example, when a video is finished playing the player can tell JavaScript that it has finished. Many of our customers use this feature in a variety of ways. Not too long ago a great customer of ours, Beckinfield, came into our offices and showed us the latest version of their product and we thought it they used this feature in an interesting way so we thought we’d share it with you.

Beckinfield uses the JavaScript callbacks in our Flash video player to display a different end-cap than the default one we provide. The end-cap is the screen you see in the Viddler Flash video player when a video has finished playing. Since Beckinfield would like to promote content within their product in a much different way than we provide, they simply use the playStopped() JavaScript function to replace our Flash video player with their own screen.

Confused? Here is a video to show you how this works on their site.

We love it when our customers use our platform in new and innovative ways. Beckinfield’s use of our JavaScript callbacks is but one example of this and we hope to share more of these with you here on our blog.

Viddler Mobile Video Support

Published July 11, 2011 by Ian Borg in Customer Support,Using Viddler

Viddler Business accounts support many of today’s mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, newer BlackBerry, and Android devices. This article will let you know just how easy it is to make all of your videos mobile.

Check Account Settings

By default, Business accounts have Mobile Device encoding support enabled. To make sure they are on, visit your Encoding settings.

If you’ve just turned these settings to “On” You will want to click the “Re-encode” button, which will make mobile-compatible versions of files that do not currently have them.

You may also want to head over to your Sharing & email settingsand change your default embed code. We recommend changing over to the “iframe” version, but if you need advanced features or your content management system has issues with iframes, you should choose “Flash with HTML5 Mobile Fallback”, note however, that this method doesn’t work on all devices.

Embedding

Embedding is just as easy as before. Just choose the proper embed code for your situation (iframe or “Flash with HTML5 Mobile Fallback”), and insert that code on to your site:

Published July 6, 2011 by Ian Borg in Customer Support,Using Viddler

Business clients have the ability to upgrade to our next generation of video player, which contains both new and enhancements of existing features.

Meet the New Player:

Full

Simple

Features of the New Player:

  • Completley Rewritten using ActionScript 3 – Makes the player more reliable
  • Improved Support for 3rd party Services—Including LiveRail and ComScore
  • The Ability to build your own player skins, or go chromeless
  • Backwards Compatibility – It’s not necessary to update your embed codes when you switch. All of your current embed codes will update to the new player
  • Risk-Free! For now, you are able to switch between the two player types

How to Upgrade:

Go to http://viddler.com/player-upgrade, and choose “Upgrade my players now!”, then click “Save Upgrade Choice” – It could take a few hours for the change to go through.

After Upgrade Checklist:

You may want to consider looking at the following things, just to make sure everything went as planned:

  • Check to confirm embedded players are loading – Check at least a few, and if you use multiple types of players (Full, simple) check at least one of each type.
  • Check player colors. Some upgraded configurations result in the player controls appearing hidden on mouse-over (depending on the background color)
  • If you do experience issues, please report it to our support team and/or feel free to downgrade using the same form you used to upgrade.
