HTML5 Support Coming Soon
Update: HTML5 support isĀ here!
Now that the iPad has sold over 300,000 units this weekend, and as Engadget showed us how cool the iPad is, we have received many emails and phone calls asking where we are at with HTML5 development and iPad support.
Short Version
We have been preparing for mobile/iPad support for last three months. We are only three weeks away from having very nice line of embeddable options for Partners and Business Service customers. Most customers have been asking for flash by default and then goto HTML5 for iPad/iPhone and that’s how we intend to release the first version.
For personal accounts, due to some technical blockers on keeping it affordable we need to overcome, won’t be available a few months.
Long Version
Multiple pieces must be put together for video to work well with your blog.
- Compatible Embedding – we have been working on a compatible embed code that will work with popular CMS systems (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Facebook). For latest mobile testing, you can preview what we are doing here.
- Mobile Compatibility – you will need to replace your current embed code with a new one. While we are doing this for iPad/iPhone we might as well take care of other popular mobile platforms including Android and RIM.
- Player Branding – with HTML5 we are hoping to retain the branding of your flash player for the HTML5 player. This isn’t easy and is taking some Javascript magic.
- New Encoding format – this is the biggest change to the system. FLV does not work in HTML5 and adding multiple formats has required us to rethink our current encoding workflow. This has been taking up most of the time spent in getting this ready. This transcoding upgrade will also increase the quality and reliability of our HD delivery.
Hope this shares some insight into the process we have been going through with adding HTML5 support.

May 9, 2010 - 6:37 pmHTML 5 offers a lot of video functionality…. not surprised in the least that Viddler is on top of it….. good business model to roll this out to paying business clients too… might be the kicker I need to sign up for a paying account.

May 12, 2010 - 8:26 amWhy would you show an explicit video on a website trying to appeal to business and corporate clients? Bad choice. http://itest.viddler.com/

May 14, 2010 - 2:17 pmWe Apple mobile device users are very grateful that you considered moving towards the future. This will also be useful for all the other mobile users who don't want to bother with Flash plug-ins. It'll give them one less thing to update constantly. We're hoping many other video sites will follow your lead. You guys are going to get a lot more traffic this year as the iPad users grow into the millions. Make sure you let everyone know about your alternate HTML5 effort. We're not asking you kill Flash but at least offer an alternate way of viewing videos.
Thanks.
