Interview: Kenn Bell of The Dog Files

Published October 6, 2008 by Colin Devroe in Community Spotlight

Kenn Bell is the producer of The Dog Files (subscribe: dogfiles) a video podcast about, you guessed it, dogs.  Kenn’s background is in writing, graphic design, and film making.  All of these talents play a big part in why I think The Dog Files is a great, great addition to Viddler’s community.

1. What is The Dog Files and where did the idea come from?

The Dog Files is a web video show that celebrates the special bond between people and their dogs.
The idea came to me after I got my dog, Max. I adopted him from a shelter and he really changed my life. I couldn’t get over how smart, nice and loving he was to me. And how little he wanted in return.

Dog’s give us so much and want nothing back but our companionship. They deserve our respect and compassion and I wanted to do a show that was sort of a love letter to all things canine…and I think we did just that.

2. How did you get into video?

I started out working at a comic book company and one day my friend and I decided that it wasn’t comics we were in love with, but stories. I loved the idea of telling a tale no matter what medium is was. I also remembered how much the Planet of the Apes and Star Wars movies (old ones) meant to me. So I bought a video camera and haven’t looked back!

3. What tools do you use to produce The Dog Files?

I shoot in HD using a Panasonic HVX200 camcorder. I edit it Final Cut Pro and Color Correct in Adobe After Effects. Compressor is used for outputting different sizes of the finished show.

4. What is your favorite story that you heard while you were making an episode of The Dog Files?

I don’t remember a particular one, but what always amazes me is how much these animals have affected the lives of their owners and rescuers. And how much joy, comfort and hope they bring to their human family’s every day.

5. Who is a better director, you, or your Dog?

I think I’m a better director, but Max is clearly a more-talented thespian. Just the other day, his agent called demanding more dog bones and an air-conditioned trailer if I ever wanted to direct Max again. I think it’s going to his head!

Thanks so much for Kenn and his team for sharing the experiences and The Dog Files with us.  Be sure to check out their Web site for more information.
