New: Monetize your videos

Posted in Announcements, Featured by Colin Devroe on November 15, 2007

There are a few main challenges faced by online video producers. The first of which is reaching a broad audience. The second, for some, is finding a way to earn money from their hard work.

Viddler has always had a vision to help make it easy to share high-quality video online and this helps with the first challenge. Today we’re expanding that vision by making it easier than ever to earn money on the hard work of our Viddler community.

Today we’re launching an entirely new set of advertising features that is available to every single user of Viddler.com and we can’t be more excited about it. These features have been built with our current, and future, community in mind. Whether the videos are viewed by large audiences, small audiences, or the producer is seeking sponsorship - our new platform can help to manage these efforts.

If you are an advertiser and are looking for more information on how you can get involved with our new system - please visit our advertiser page.

How is the ad platform structured? We’ve actually stacked two main platforms on top of one another. The first ad system we have in place allows advertisers to bid on keywords for ad placement. We call this the Viddler ad platform. Our Viddler community is then able to pick and choose which of their own tags may be used to display ads and subsequently be bid on. The second system uses Amazon affiliate ads to earn revenue based on actual sales through the Amazon store. This system works much the same as the Viddler platform, just that the ads being displayed are chosen by a contextual search of Amazon’s store and not a bidding system.

How is the revenue sharing handled? With both ad platforms Viddler offers a 50/50 revenue sharing model. At present we’re only offering a CPC (or, Cost Per Click) model with our Viddler ad platform. We have plans to add CPM (or, Cost Per Thousand impressions) to our ad platform in the future. The Amazon affiliate ad revenues are determined by actual sales, and not by clicks or impressions. Being such the most equitable split is that we’re rotating the ownership of the ad 50/50 with the community and Viddler. In both cases, though, we’re keeping click-thru statistics to make it easy to track what works and what doesn’t.

What makes this platform different? By far the biggest difference between our ad system and others that we’ve researched is choice. We offer the producer and the advertiser the choice of where to show their ads. For instance, every ad shown on the Viddler ad platform is completely contextual and never misplaced. This guarantees value to our advertisers and less obtrusion to our producer’s audiences. Also each producer can choose whether or not to allow ads on a specific tag. Viddler never forces an ad to be displayed - which is valuable to everyone involved.

Viddler has always had the most interactive video player and we’ve leveraged this with our new ad platforms. Timed contextual ads that occur during a video based on the producer’s choice is something that has never been seen in advertising. This mixture of context and choice makes the Viddler ad platform very powerful. Quite possibly the most valuable ad platform for online video ever built.

We will be setting up a more detailed look into our ad system soon. You may sign up for this service through the new “Revenue” area of our site. If you have any questions you may ask them in the comments of this post, or use our contact form.

For other great examples of this new ad platform in action, take a look at: The Best Damn Tech Show Period, our Old Tech of the Day group, a search for ‘iPhone’, and many other great videos created by our Viddler community.

We’re very excited about the future and we hope you are too.

@babblin5: The REVENUE link is at the top of the page, in the green toolbar. This link doesn’t appear when on the blog page.

The ability for the producer to allow only those advertisers to place ads that they themselves approve, as well as approving their placement, is maximum control for the producer. The advertiser’s ability to place an ad tag at the appropriate spot that stimulates the maximum attractability from the viewer; is the ultimate “Product Placement” imaginable. Not to mention the ease for the viewer to return to an ad that sparked their interest. Overall, this cutting edge sales promotion is the least intrusive sales pitch, with the maximum impact on a targeted audience. Good-by to “POP UPS”, “drop downs”, “machine-gun, delete proof, transitional ads”, and “Run to the potty commercials”. Thank you “Pause” & “My Favorites” (good-by TiVo). The primary goal in any good video is to capture the interest of the viewer, and deliver the message which the producer intended. To accomplish this, and produce the financial support necessary to make all involved in the venture happy, is no easy trick. Viddler is pulling it off in high fashion.

Think of the possibilities for the consumers to add their own testimonials pro and con. Then there is the rush of other competing advertisers for a tag spot. Oh! the possibilities are Viddler.

Hey guys nice job on the new features. One thing that concerns me from watching Justine’s video is that the ads get lost when other comments and tags pop up. I sometimes did not have the time to view what was being displayed as an ad. I’m sure this will work its way out, but would like to hear your thoughts on my comments. A few questions about further enhancements. What about a revshare model for those publishers that embed video in thier own sites/blogs, much like revver does (40, 40, 20)? Also when do you thing we will see a public API allowing developers to build their own businesses and interfaces using the Viddler platform and also participating in the revshare? Anyway, great job on the new features.
