Test our new player!

Posted in Announcements by Colin Devroe on May 30, 2007

I’m very excited to announce that we’re live testing a new player today! This new player addresses our buffering issues that have plagued some of you, and we hope we’ve solved that issue. Help us test it out by watching some video! Please let us know what you think here on this post, or in the forums. Here is what the player looks like, and what’s changed.

Viddler's new player!

In the above screenshot you can see how we’ve given you a really quick way to switch between progressive and streaming download options. If you are having buffering issues, switch to progressive, if not - stick with streaming. Now the choice is yours and your preferences will be saved so that no matter where you view Viddler video - the option will be remember.

Thanks for helping us test this and please provide feedback if you experience any issues with this new player.

Update: Someone asked me to link to a video to test, but we want you to test any video that you’ve wanted to watch but have had buffering issues on. So go forth, and explore!

Update 2: A quick description of the difference between streaming and progressive might be in order here. Streaming a Viddler video will buffer only a few seconds worth of video in front of the playhead. By doing this you’re able to jump around inside of a video as much as you want, right away, without loading the entire video. Progressively downloading a video will download the entire movie in the background, allowing you to watch the movie from the beginning but limiting where you can “scrub” to (which is only in the video that has been loaded which is indicated by the blue background). All other features including timed tagging, video commenting, etc. all remain the same. You will not lose out on any features should you choose to stream or progressively download videos. Any more questions? Don’t be afraid to ask!

    great idea.

I’m still not sure about the play/back/forwards buttons being on the right. I tried to get used to it, but I keep going to mouse to the wrong area.

It is one of those things that is ingrained in many people. And I’m not sure it is worth deviating from.

This has probably been discussed plenty already. If it has, point me to the discussion please :)

    atmasphere: Thanks!

Cris (atariboy): Yeah, I’m of the same opinion. At the moment we’re testing our new feature, but we’ll be taking another look at our player from a usability perspective soon too. This has been discussed before, by a few others, and we are definitely hearing all of you.

What a difference that “progressive” button makes over streaming! I wish I could make all of my videos play in progressive mode only, when bloggers view my videos. I guess I’ll just put a mention in the blogs to click on the switch.

Viddler, you’ve not been fiddling around, you’ve been tweaking this site to be the “one and only!”

    Thank you!!!
