Testing our WordPress video commenting plugin

Posted in Announcements by Colin Devroe on January 28, 2008

In case you missed our secret video, we’re working on a WordPress plugin that makes it quick and easy to record, or choose video comments to blog posts.

We’ve got a little ways to go with testing, but we thought now would be a pretty good time to ask anyone that would like to help us test it - to do so below. The instructions are pretty simple. You can log into your Viddler account using your normal Viddler username and password and either record a video with your webcam, or choose an existing video on your Viddler account as your video response to this post.

Here is a small list of some issues you may encounter, that we’re working on fixing prior to the release of this plugin.

  • Logging into your Viddler account, while already logged in here on the blog, seems a little counter-intuitive doesn’t it? We’re going to fix that, but for now you will have to log in.
  • Privacy, and your personal account information, is important to us. Forcing you to log in using your username and password, from any other website besides Viddler.com, would not be the more private way to handle user authentication. So, we’ll be using OAuth to make it so that anyone using this plugin on their site will not have access to your username and password. We will have this done before we release this plugin.
• If you currently have your default sharing options set to make each new video private, you may notice that recording a video with your webcam will also set that video as private. Don’t panic! Just go to that video and set it as public and your comment will appear normally. The very next version of our API will resolve this issue.
  • You can only choose from your ten most recent videos on Viddler to use as a video comment. We’d like to extend the plugin to allow you to choose any of your videos.
  • Styling. We need to make it look much nicer or our own blog.

All of these things aside, we think this plugin is really fun to play around with. So go ahead and give a spin below the comment form.

Note: If you have your settings make videos private by default, you will need to make your videos public.

Colin, anyway to get around this with API?

[…] It’s not out yet, but the folks at Viddler just gave a super secret sneak peek at something awesome: a video comments plugin for Wordpress. This is incredibly huge for both the Viddler community, and for bloggers in general. There is a growing number of people who would never take the time to type out a comment, but they’d rather say a few words or give a short rant in response to a blog entry. As more and more people have and use high quality webcams, this will only become more popular. […]

After using it and submitting I noticed that the video didn’t actually have any issues so that’s good.

But! It created a normal video in my viddler account that has full public permissions. I went and watched it an it makes no sense without the context of the blog entry. Maybe when using viddler through this it would save the videos as private? At least there should be an option to do so.

I can’t get it to work on my blog. I uploaded it and activated it, but it’s not showing up under my comments box.

    Any ideas?

    My blog is here:

It looks like a pretty cool plugin. Let me know when it’s ready and I’ll give it a try on http://OneMansBlog.com.

The only problem I see is that it’ll make reviewing comments a little trickier because you have to actually watch the video responses as opposed to my normal process of reading them in e-mail, on my cell phone, etc.

Colin, so far the plugin looks great. I’ve recorded a speech for a class and this plugin would help greatly to test out on my blog. The video I recorded for class is at http://srcasm.com/2008/02/13/speech-1-what-is-net-neutrality/ but let me know if testing this plugin would be possible.

[…] I am experimenting with the Viddler video comment plugin. There is a link below the comment box that allows you to record a video response using your webcam (or upload a pre-recorded video from Viddler). […] Who says the internet, an particularly blogging, has to be a one way medium. There’s always been commenting, but Viddler has raised the bar. The video-streaming company has developed a WordPress plug-in that allows blog readers to comment by video. You can see a sample post on their website. This looks promising, but seriously, who wants to make sure their hair is just right before commenting? […]
