Viddler

Daily features, announcements, and much more!

Rethink, rebuild, redesign. We’re excited about what’s next.

Published December 2, 2011 by Colin Devroe in Announcements

As anyone who works on software knows – maintaining seldom-used features is a distraction from the features that matter most. Our team would never want the Viddler platform to suffer because we’re not willing get rid of the parts that aren’t used even if we worked really hard on them.

For this reason we’ve gone back to the drawing board, reviewed our usage statistics in detail, and have worked hard over the last few months to rethink, rebuild, and redesign the most important parts of Viddler. We’re really excited to share with you exactly what is in, what is out, and what is new – but we’re still a month or so away from launching the next version of Viddler.

To show you how excited we are we’ve created a short video explaining some of our thinking behind the next version of Viddler. Over the next month we’ll be explaining some of our decisions right here on the blog and how all of our customers can prepare for the changes ahead.

I don't care what you do, just please keep proving amazing video hosting services. You guys freakin rock! I recently switched over from hosting my videos on Amazon S3 (for my membership site). What a HUGE difference. My videos on Amazon S3 would always freeze and pause during stream. I would get so many complaints. I found Viddler, signed up for business pro, switched all m video over and I feel like I'm in heaven. Firs it saves me like 30 to 45 minutes of encoding time AND the video playback is amazing. The player is sleek (love the black design) and I feel so confident now as a business that I can offer great training to my customers through my videos and not worry about the playback being shaky. No one's paying me to write this. I just had to give you guys a shout. Keep up the great work, I know the new Viddler will be killer. It already is.

Change is always good! But wasn't viddler for free a few month ago?

"It won't have the same social features that it use to have"…. What does this mean? No social sharing? I'm confused.

Go Viddler go! Clean up is good.. take some of the best features from blip.tv & vimeo (currently there is just oo much stuff on "a video's page". That underlying platform you have is so great. We love the b2b features, sub accounts, etc… keep it up!

New features, a new direction? Sounds good. I'm sure I will like the new viddler. Make the best of it, and: never mind the grousers.

Excited to be able to search my videos more effectively. Please consider creating tools so a user will be able to quickly batch tag videos, etc to take advantage of the new search functionality as quickly and efficiently as possible, thanks for a great product and a support team that rocks, thanks.

You guys rock! We've been using your Biz Pro services since 2008 and we're SO happy we made the decision to go with you guys way back then. Keep up the great work!

Will API integration change at all?

The new version looks promising, but what about helping the users whose videos are not working anymore?

We turned off Personal (free) signups at the end of October, 2011. Legacy Personal accounts weren't affected, and there's currently the option to signup for a Free Trial account if you need to kick the tires before committing to a paid membership. :)

That just means we will no longer allow users to "friend" people, "subscribe" to people, "favorite" videos, or send messages within Viddler. These features have been extremely underused in the past few years, so we're removing them to simplify out interface.

There will be an export tool if you'd like to extract a list of your friends, subscriptions, favorites, messages, etc.

Social sharing features such as sharing to Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr/et al. will be available and better than ever in the new design. :)

The current v2 API will continue to work as is. In fact, it will have some additions which some users will be excited about. Said additions will be detailed here on the blog soon.
