Announcing Viddler 2.0!

Posted in Announcements, Featured by Colin Devroe on April 17, 2007

The Viddler development team has been hard at work updating every part of Viddler.com and Viddler’s video player to help give you the best experience possible. They’ve taken some of your ideas, mixed them in with some of our own, and built Viddler 2.0. There are so many new features, that I think I’ll let Napoleon tell you what they all are:

  • Video commenting can now be done on the timeline. This makes it quick and easy to actually respond to a video using your web cam while you’re watching the video.
  • Global commenting shows all of the comments in the timeline, as well as just general comments that were left about the video, in a threaded manner below the video.
  • Feeds are found everywhere to make it easy to subscribe to the forums, your favorite users, your own videos for syndicating to your blog perhaps (like Chris J. Davis’ lifestream as an example) and even tag subscriptions.
  • Sharing your videos has never been easier and the functionality has been enhanced ten-fold with this version. You can now do things like give out a “Secret URL” to share private videos with non-Viddler users. Or, you can share your videos with your friends via any of the many social sites out there.
  • Blogging your videos can now be done without ever leaving Viddler. Two-clicks and a video is posted to your blog. I love this feature, and we’re working hard to expand on it to include even more blogging platforms.
  • Personal and global tags now make it easier to look at a specific user’s videos filtered by a specific tag. Or, you can view all videos tagged with a keyword.
  • Social tagging means that you can now tag your friends videos, in case their lazy. Or, you might want to tag a video to make it easier to find later. Right now, this is limited to timed tags only - but it won’t be long until you can also use this for global tags on a video.
  • Flickr and Twitter have been integrated into user profiles. To go beyond that, Viddler will now automatically update your Twitter account whenever you “do something” on Viddler. This is highly-customizable, so go into your profile options and check it out.
  • Yes there is more. Our featured videos have an updated home. Now it is easier than ever to keep up-to-date with the greatest videos on Viddler. Not only are the latest few shown on the user’s dashboard, but we’ve created a calendar to show each day’s featured video.
  • Several new ways to explore videos are now in the Explore section. You can view by Most Popular, Most Favorited, Most Discussed, and so on. This will make it easier to find content that the entire community is watching, favoriting, or talking about.
  • Play all of a single user’s videos with one click. Simply go to a video of the user you want to watch, click Play All, and Viddler will create a “playlist” of all of that user’s videos and automatically play them all. You can skip around if you’d like to.

Included with all of these updates are more subtle update to the user-interface, the underlying infrastructure, and the video player itself to help make things much faster, easier, and generally much more fun to use here on Viddler. We hope you take the time to explore all of our new features and then leave us some feedback in the forums.

According to Viddler’s own Terms of Use agreement:

“… By uploading User Content to the Viddler Website, you hereby represent and warrant that:

    * You own all right, title and interest (including all intellectual property rights) in your User Content (including, without limitation, all rights to the audio, video, or digital recording, and the performance contained in your User Content) or, alternatively, you have acquired all necessary rights in your User Content to enable you to grant the rights in your User Content described herein;
    * You have already paid, and you will be solely responsible for paying (to the extent any later become due) all royalties, fees, and any other monies owing any person by reason of any User Content posted by you to or through the Website and the Services. …”

    And

“… Viddler and its Partners respect the intellectual property of others, and we ask you and all of our users to do the same. Viddler may remove content from the Website that violates these policies and/or disable and/or terminate the accounts of users who may violate our policies. …”

So come on guys, you have some pretty cool technology here, and you appear to understand that the rights of content producers are to be respected. So why start off on the wrong foot? By including content from Napoleon Dynamite and music from Jamiroquai you are signaling to your audience that it is ok to mashup copyrighted content.

    Not cool.

thrak: I’ll have a much more “official” response to this… but suffice to say that we’ll be making some adjustments to our TOU in order to make it apparent that we’d love to see more mashups… we encourage people to do fun things that help promote these various properties….

We really appreciate everyone’s concern and we are very well aware of the implications of some of the things we’ve done. I’ll get with the proper people and we’ll get the TOU updated and release an announcement ASAP.

Thanks everyone…. keep the feedback coming.
