Everything HD in an 18″ Laptop; $1,600
HotHardware (subscribe) is back with a fully-stocked and very affordable notebook computer!
Everyone is obsessed with high-definition content right now. Especially on the Internet. Though, when I happened to be watching some U.S. television last year shows such as Entertainment Tonight were so excited about their (then upcoming) HD channel that they promoted it every time they went to a commercial break. I wouldn’t say online content creators are that obsessed, but they’re certainly making sure they offer HD content whenever possible.
Viewers of HD content — like you and I — love big plasma or LCD screens to watch on, but if you can’t afford one or you’re traveling then there’s usually a perfectly capable laptop that can display videos in great clarity. HP’s HDX 18t Premium Series Notebook is one such computer. By that I mean that this desktop replacement can do anything and everything sans recording HD video.
With a native resolution of 1920×1080p on an 18″ screen it can display Full HD videos without any letterboxing or pillarboxing; no black bars! Of course, if you do have a recent model HDTV, then you can plug the HDX 18t in to it using the HDMI port. As well as the unlimited amount of HD content online — such as Sweet Adventures — you can get the optional TV tuner to receive over-the-air HD content right to your computer and feed it to your T.V. Who needs a digital set top box when you have one in your computer?
These days, it’s most common for desktop computer monitors to range from 17-24 inches in screen size, and this HP fits nicely in to that size. It can be considered a desktop replacement, but I think it would be perfect for traveling; road trips, planes, hotel rooms, etc. With a battery that lasts about the length of a feature film you’d have no problem staying entertained during a single charge.
Here’s Dave from HotHardware to further introduce the HP HDX 18t to you:
I’m impressed that you can get all that for $1,600! Those Laptop Hunters commercials by Microsoft are definitely accurate on the very affordable price of laptops that run Windows — even if they misinterpret the value of a Mac. If you really wanted to you could run OS X on a laptop like the HDX, but that would require some hackintosh experimentation of your own.
An actual desktop computer with similar specifications to the HDX would probably cost just under $1,000, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as portable as the HDX. It’s such great value in that regard. I’ll top commending it now; the glossy screen would be a pain to watch anything on. Have you seen the latest Macbook range that also have glossy screens? You see so many reflections in them! The only advantage is that it’s slightly easier to clean.
If you’ve really enjoyed watching a particular video or a series on Viddler, then send me a message and let me know about it. Even if it’s your show, we’d love to show it to the rest of the Viddler community.
