Even if you live under a shell in a cave, you’ve probably heard of an iPhone. If you live under a shell in a city, then you probably own one.

The iPhone has had very little serious competition since its release almost two years ago. In the United States, Sprint made an attempt with the Samsung Instinct while RIM’s Blackberry Storm was their counteract via the Verizon network. Overseas, several Nokia devices have also come close.

Today, the iPhone will meet it’s first serious competition; Palm’s Pre. Ever since it’s announcement at CES 2009 it has had a lot of hype, and many technologists (aka geeks) believe the new smart phone will live up to it. I know a few people that are purchasing a Pre today. They’re that confident in the pre-release reviews and hype.

I won’t go in to any technical details because that’s what sites like Engadget (subscribe), Gizmodo (The definitive guide & FAQ), and shows like Tekzilla (subscribe) are for. I’ll just let you enjoy this cute launch video for the Pre.

iPhone users/fans have been waiting for competition like this for a while. Competition always means that both sides only have to get better, so the upcoming iPhone hardware and software is expected to at least be level with the Palm Pre. We’ll just wait and see…
