How to Create Compliance Training That People Pay Attention To
Compliance training is not something that people look forward to. While not often associated with positive thoughts, it doesn’t have to be dreaded!
We’re all adults (I’m assuming) and we understand these courses are required—to prevent some serious trouble. We’re willing to comply, to satisfy these requirements. That doesn’t mean such courses have to bore us to tears.
For compliance training, there are two basic rules: the KISS principle and using interactive video. The best compliance videos are short and simple, with a lively, well-rehearsed presenter speaking energetically, so there is no rambling.
Interactive video training is a great way to demonstrate skills to remote teams for compliance issues. It leaves little room for interpretation. Compliance training requires that everyone watch and understand the content. Using online video training is the best way to reach a dispersed audience. Using a non-interactive system like Vimeo will not provide the specific user analytics to prove 100% video playback by individual users.
With that in mind, here are seven steps for creating your next course:
ONE: Create your Content
If you are just starting out and don’t have a studio or editing suite, you can start with the basics. Simple video production can start with a phone, recording from your webcam or recording a screencast or webinar. I often recommend starting out with Camtasia, which has simple screencasting and editing capabilities. If you’re a Mac user, QuickTime Pro is fine. Again, KISS!
TWO: Set the Stage
Once content is created, we need to place it in our secured learning space. This may be inside your corporate intranet or a secure training site, such as Viddler’s VTS. Security through a tracked login is important. It will keep unwanted competitors out, and prevent illegal sharing leaks—so make sure your platform has these capabilities.
THREE: Engage through Interactions
The most critical element of interactive training is, well, the interactivity! You will keep your users actively engaged (and learning) by inserting assessments, comments and links throughout the course. At the end of the day, your main goal is that your learners understand the training materials, so interactivity is a must-have for all video learning.
FOUR: Create Your Users
Create or import a list of people required to view the course. These people will need to login to the system in order to view and interact with the content. This is also how you will be able to track video completion rates per person. A good learning platform or portal will use individual assessment metrics to track each person’s understanding of the content.
FIVE: Schedule Go Live and Required By Dates
Schedule your start and end dates and notify your people what they need to do—and by when. Setting clear expectations is the best way to get high completion rates. This includes disclosing the length of time required to complete the course by when, and why this course is necessary.
SIX: Track Viewer Completion
View user tracking reports to see who has (and who has not) completed required courses. Ideally, your portal enables you to easily see the people who have completed the course and those who have not started or who have not finished. This makes is easy to notify “slackers”—and encourage achievers.
SEVEN: Report on Course Progress
Share your final reports with your team. The reports should show completion rates among the whole team and show any individuals who have not completed it. The reports will also show responses and scores to the answered assessments throughout the course.
Keep your content short and simple and hold it in a secure, interactive video training platform—complete with learner tracking tools—and you got yourself a great framework for your compliance courses. These steps may not earn your videos any awards, but they should help keep your audience engaged and completing courses faster.
